The company Mitaka Kohki was founded in 1966 in the city of Mitaka — one of Japan’s centers of astronomy and precision optics. From its earliest years, the company participated in the development of equipment for space exploration and later became a partner in international aerospace projects, including NASA and JAXA programs.

Decades of experience working with astronomical telescopes, space imaging systems, and ultra-precision measuring instruments shaped the unique engineering expertise of Mitaka Kohki. This experience was later transferred to medicine — a field where precision, stability, and reliability are critically important.

Today, Mitaka surgical microscopes are used by leading specialists in neurosurgery, microsurgery, and oncology around the world. The company is renowned for its innovative balancing systems, ergonomic stands, and ultra-high-resolution optics capable of distinguishing structures as small as 9 microns.

HISTORY

Over the decades, Mitaka Kohki has devoted its efforts to the development and manufacturing of high-tech astronomical optical devices and innovative space imaging systems.

We apply the expertise gained in the aerospace industry to integrate advanced technologies and ultra-precision manufacturing methods into the development of medical systems.

1966	Foundation of Mitaka Kohki. In the same year, NASA selected the small Japanese company Mitaka Kohki Co., Ltd. from among global optical manufacturers for cooperation.
1971	Manufacturing of astronomical telescopes.

1983	Participation in the SEPAC project of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. Equipping the systems with Mitaka Kohki cameras.
1988	Opening of a new development direction — medicine. Obtaining a license for the production of medical equipment and beginning the manufacture of patented microscope stands for Leica. Receiving positive feedback from neurosurgeons worldwide.
1994	Release of the unique OH1 stand for neurosurgical microscopes.
1999	Development of the company’s own neurosurgical microscope MM30/SOH.

2004	Release of the high-resolution MM50 surgical microscope with a resolving power of 9 microns, capable of distinguishing red blood cells.
2005	Development of a fluorescence microscope for tumor surgery.
2014	Obtaining ISO13485 certification and entering the international market.
2018	Launch of sales for the new-generation MM90 surgical microscopes.
2020	Release of the HawkSight 4K3D Digital Surgical Microscope.
